Carpenter wrecks during eliminations
BAYTOWN, Texas—Veteran Pro Modified racer Charles Carpenter of Harrisburg, NC was involved in a high-speed accident Saturday afternoon during the first round of Pro Nitrous eliminations at the Safety-Kleen Dragpaloza when he lost control of his 1955 Chevy just past the finish line and made contact with the right-side retaining wall.
Carpenter had already pulled his parachute - which helped keep his car upright as it slammed into the wall. After the car rolled to a stop in the shutdown area, Carpenter exited the car just as National Guard ADRL safety crews were arriving on the scene.
Carpenter got loose after defeating Ed Burnsley.
Carpenter appeared shaken but uninjured. He was evaluated by medical personnel at the track and then transported to a local hospital for further tests.

Moyer takes home the Flowmaster cash
BAYTOWN, Texas—Local racer Todd Moyer made it look easy.
The veteran Extreme 10.5 campaigner from nearby Pasadena, Texas lit up the Houston Raceway Park scoreboard with a 187.05 mph run that was two miles-per-hour quicker than he needed to take home the $5000 Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 bounty posted for the first driver to exceed 185 mph.
His 4.122 elapsed time was also good enough to put him in the No. 1 qualifying position for the Safety-Kleen Dragpalooza V.
“The off-season was all work and no play,” said Moyer.

Purvis Ford Lincoln-Mercury Posts Extreme Pro Stock Qualifying Bonus
BAYTOWN, Texas – Purvis Ford Lincoln-Mercury of Fredricksburg, Virginia, the automotive dealership “where they speak cars” announced today that they will pay a $1000 bonus to the No. 1 qualifier in Extreme Pro Stock at all ten national events on the 2009 National Guard ADRL tour.
Extreme Pro Stock racer Robert Patrick Jr., whose family owns Purvis Ford Lincoln Mercury, made the announcement during day two of the Safety-Kleen Dragpalooza V at Houston Raceway Park.
“The ADRL’s Extreme Pro Stock class is absolutely the future,” said Patrick. “We want to support it in any way that we can.”
And he added, “I plan to earn my fair share of No. 1 qualifiers.”
If Patrick does qualify No. 1, it might give fans and fellow competitors reason to believe he was just taking the money out of one pocket and putting it in the other.
To that, Patrick answered, “Make no doubt about it, every time I win the No. 1 qualifying spot, I will give the money to whomever is No. 2.”

Glidden Goes 4.18 to Take Early XTF Pole
Satring up right where he left off last October, reigning Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 World Champion Billy Glidden set low E.T. in the opening round of qualifying at the Safety’Kleen Dragpalooza V.
Glidden’s nitrous-fed, small-block Ford-powered ‘06 GTO edged ADRL newcomer Jake Carlton and his Procharger-equipped ‘02 Grand Am by just two-thousandths of a second for the provisional top spot.
Top contenders for a $5,000 bonus from Flowmaster for exceeding 185 mph, Todd Moyer and Chuck Ulsch, paired up for their opening qualifying shot, but Moyer left before the tree was activated and received no time, while Ulsch slowed at the top end.
They’ll all try again tomorrow, with round two of qualifying beginning at 10 a.m.

Pappas Awaits New Pontiac
Chicago racer Spiro Pappas is making his Extreme 10.5 debut in the Safety-Kleen Dragpalooza V at Houston Raceway Park, driving his Skinny Kid-built ‘69 Camaro with a 548 c.i. Hemi boosted by a pair of 88 mm turbos.
Pappas said he plans on running the full 10-race schedule with the ADRL in 2009 and will introduce a brand-new 2009 Pontiac GXP (above) to the series in April at the ADRL Georgia Drags at South Georgia Motorsports Park.
The new car, built by Jerry Bickel, will carry the same single-114 mm turbocharged 520 cubic incher that powered him to the NMCA Super Street championship last year.
“We’re here to beat Glidden,” Pappas stated, referring to defending class champ and provisional number-one qualifier at Houston, Billy Glidden. “This new car is going to be fast.”
