Pro Extreme - Eliminations

In a true-life David vs. Goliath battle, Steve Wiley (far lane) treed Joshua Hernandez in the Pro Extreme final, but his '68 Camaro spun its tires near half-track, alllowing Hernandez to speed past and take the event win. Also, note that in round one of eliminations, Jason Scruggs went 203.89 mph in his win over Bill Doucet to back up his qualifying speed for a new official ADRL record. (ADRL/Ian Tocher photo)

Extreme 10.5 - Eliminations

Identical E.T.s flashed on the Houston Raceway Park scoreboards at the conclusion of the Extreme 10.5 final, but it was the .039 advantage off the start that spelled victory for reigning class champ Steve Gorman in the right lane. (ADRL/Ian Tocher photo)

Making Something Out of Nothing

With carloads of unaware fans continuing to stream in to Houston Raceway Park after dangerous conditions put an end to the possibility of any test or qualifying laps by the more than 100 race teams on the grounds, ADRL President Kenny Nowling personally escorted two busloads of school children on a tour of the pits, visiting Pro Extreme racer Don Wooten and Pro Nitrous drivers Billy Harper and Dennis Radford before taking them to the starting line where Pro Extreme Motorcycle rider Monte Campbell volunteered an exhibition burnout despite already packing up his bike and gear for the night. Braving overcast skies, temperatures in the 30s and a steady wind of 25 mph all day long that gusted to above 40 mph, ADRL fans turned in more than 12,000 tickets today at the HRP turnstiles. With much improved weather (mid-60s, sunshine and 5-mph winds) forecast for Saturday's twin qualifiers and eliminations, a record-setting crowd is expected at HRP with the potential for the biggest crowd ever in drag racing history. Flu Bug Claims Cupp
Brian Cupp, the ADRL's intrepid round-by-round reporter, fell victim to a lingering flu in Houston, forcing him to return home to Alabama without even making it out to the track. So, unfortunately our planned live coverage will be reduced to photos and results posted at the completion of each round of qualifying and eliminations. We apologize for the change in plans and wish Brian a speedy recovery.

Mother Nature Cancels Round One Qualifying

At 5 p.m., ADRL President Kenny Nowling announced round one of qualifying at Drag Illustrated Dragpalooza IV would not be run because of high winds and cold weather at Houston Raceway Park. "Everyone knows that the safety is first and foremost with the ADRL, so with that in mind we've decided to cancel today's on-track activities," Nowling said over the track's P.A. system. "It's just too windy and there's not enough track temperature to run safely tonight." With qualifying on the rocks, Nowling then invited race team members and fans to enjoy a trackside concert by country-rock recording artists The River.
Saturday's event will go as scheduled, with qualifying beginning at noon, followed by a second qualifying session and eliminations for all four classes. (Roger Richards photo)
