National Guard ADRL moves Gateway date to August 7-8
O'FALLON, Mo. – Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.
When the soon-to-be announced title sponsor of this summer's Gateway Drags II suggested to National Guard ADRL Executive VP of Operations Jessica Alcoke that they would rather have the National Guard ADRL event at Gateway International Raceway that will bear their name take place in late summer rather than its original date, Alcoke did what any self-respecting company executive would do.
She said, "Yes."
With the National Guard ADRL announcing that it was returning to race at its hometown track, it called for something special. And the event's title sponsor agreed.
"After discussions with our title sponsor, we both agreed that we wanted to do everything possible to make sure that our hometown crowd got to have the very best National Guard ADRL experience possible," said Alcoke. "And to do that, it was going to take just a bit more time to prepare."
So, with the help of Gateway's Vice President and General Manager Lenny Batycki, the original early summer date was swapped for a late summer one.
"We're committed to having a successful event here and if it meant an August date, then we'll be racing in August," said Batycki."
And the name of the title sponsor?
"We'll be making that announcement in a couple of weeks," said Alcoke.

National Guard ADRL promotes three staffers
O'FALLON, Mo. – National Guard American Drag Racing League President and CEO Kenny Nowling announced today that he has appointed Jessica Alcoke, Jeff Fortune and Bubba Corzine to executive-level positions with the ADRL, the sanctioning body for the National Guard ADRL Tour. .jpg)
Alcoke (right) had been the executive assistant to Nowling for several years and now takes on an expanded role with the League as its Executive Vice President of Operations. Among her many duties will be to oversee the implementation and activation of the National Guard and Flowmaster partnerships with the National Guard ADRL.
It was Alcoke's idea to distribute complimentary tickets in 2006 that was the basis for the current ticket distribution program utilized by the National Guard ADRL for its national events.
"Jess' idea for complimentary tickets is without a doubt, a defining moment in the short history of the National Guard ADRL," said Nowling.
Fortune (below) has been instrumental in the growth of the National Guard ADRL in his role as Nowling's "go-to" player for the past two years. He has been elevated to the position of Senior Executive Vice President where he will oversee and direct the sales staff as well as coordinate the marketing strategy for the League as it builds upon its current success during its fifth year of operation.
"Jeff has been our utility player, filling a void wherever it occurred," said Nowling. "His ability to solve problems is an invaluable asset."
For the past three years Corzine (below right) had been the National Guard ADRL's Director of Competition. His new position will have him in the role of Executive Vice President of Competition, placing him in charge of all facets of competition for the ADRL. Along with the continuation of his role as National Guard ADRL race day director during national events, Corzine will also oversee the ADRL's technical and safety departments throughout the year.
"It's reassuring to know that we have someone with the depth of knowledge and experience like Bubba Corzine looking after our competitors," said Nowling. "On race day, there's no one better at orchestrating an event than Bubba."
All three have assumed their new roles effective immediately.

Reher-Morrison supports National Guard ADRL as contingency sponsor
ARLINGTON, Texas - Reher-Morrison Racing Engines, a mainstay in Pro Nitrous competition in the National Guard ADRL has announced that it will be a contingency sponsor for the league's 2009 tour in both the Pro Nitrous and Extreme 10.5 classes.
Every winner running a Reher-Morrison engine in those two classes will receive $500; each runner up will receive $300. Every racer using a Reher-Morrison engine that qualifies in the 16-car field will earn $200.
"We are sponsoring this program to thank our customers and to support the National Guard ADRL in their exciting ventures in 2009," said David Reher.
"We would like to thank everyone from Speedtech Nitrous. Speedtech has been pivotal in the development of this engine program. Without them, we would not be able to make such an impact in the National Guard ADRL."
Reher-Morrison is coming off an impressive showing at the National Guard ADRL World Finals last fall at Texas Motorplex, in which 4 of the 8 cars that qualified for the Speedtech Nitrous Pro Nitrous Battle for the Belts were powered by Reher-Morrison engines.
Shannon Jenkins, Stan Allen, Rickie Smith, and Burton Auxier used strong 2008 performances to qualify for the Battle for the Belts. Also, David Janes used his Reher-Morrison power and Speedtech Nitrous to qualify for the Battle for the Belts in Extreme 10.5.
Shannon Jenkins (qualified No.1), Thomas Meyers, Burton Auxier, Tim Savell, Mike Castellana, Stan Allen, John Deflorian Jr., and Dave Pierce all captured spots in the top sixteen. That meant that half of the 16-car field had Reher-Morrison power. Castellana stormed through the field to claim the National Guard ADRL World Final Pro Nitrous win.
The Reher-Morrison roster for 2009 includes Allen, Khalid Al-Balooshi, Auxier, Castellana, Deflorian Jr., Janes, Jenkins, Thomas Meyers, Pierce, Doug Riesterer, Savell, and Smith and many, many others.

Middle Eastern Champion Balooshi takes on ADRL
Current United Arab Emirates champion K A Balooshi and team owner Sheik Khalid Al Thani of Al Anabi Racing have officially announced the are committed to running the entire 10-race National Guard ADRL tour in 2009.
A new, Tim McAmis-built 1968 Camaro complete with an 800-plus cubic inch Reher and Morrison motor will power Balooshi as he competes for the Speedtch Battle for the Belts Pro Nitrous title and the $50,000 prize that goes with it.
Balooshi does know his way to the winner’s circle. He already is a drag racing superstar in the United Arab Emirates capturing three consecutive UAE championships (2006-08).
“He ran local races in slow cars in the eight-second range and started racing in our pro Top Sportsman class in 2005," said Moe Atat of the Al Anabi team. "He moved into Pro Nitrous in 2006. He takes racing very seriously. That’s all he lives for.”
Balooshi is no stranger to National Guard ADRL competition having competed at Budd's Creek (MD) and at last fall's Dragstock V at Rockingham Dragway.
“Our Al Anabi team is very excited and committed to compete in the 2009 National Guard ADRL Speedtech "Battle for the Belts," Balooshi said. “The new Camaro is the first car built for us that is fitted to my size. That makes me more comfortable and focused on driving."

Georgia returns to schedule for 2009
O'FALLON, Mo. – The National Guard ADRL has got Georgia on its mind.
American Drag Racing League officials announced today that round number two of the 2009 National Guard ADRL tour, will take place at Cook County Georgia's South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP) located in Cecil, Georgia on April 10-11.
In doing so, it gives the phrase "back by popular demand" a whole new meaning for the National Guard ADRL.
When the 2009 National Guard ADRL event schedule was being drawn up, ADRL officials had looked to expanding the tour into Florida. But late last week, a package filled with a petition containing over 6100 names of south Georgia and north Florida race fans arrived at the ADRL's O'Fallon headquarters. It had ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling placing a phone call to SGMP general manager Tim Fleming.
"I told him that I had received the petition, postmarked Cecil, Georgia," began Nowling. "I felt compelled to ask him if there was a date available for the ADRL to return to SGMP and fortunately, his answer was a resounding yes."
For the fifth year in a row, race fans from south Georgia and north Florida are expected to jam the multi-purpose racing facility located just a dozen miles north of Valdosta for Georgia Drags V.
"I'm very happy that the ADRL is coming back," said SGMP general manager Tim Fleming. "It means a lot to the track and the entire community to have them back.
"I believe what has our fans so excited about that ADRL it that their events are non-stop action from start to finish.
The dragstrip's all-concrete racing surface, one of only a few in the country, has traditionally been the site of some of the year's best performances by ADRL competitors. The track also holds the distinction of having hosted more ADRL events, five, than any other facility.
"I want to acknowledge the efforts of (track) owners Kim and Rowland Wood (in photo with Nowling) in keeping the Georgia Drags at SGMP by giving us a multi-year deal," said Nowling. "Our three-year agreement with them will guarantee that south Georgia and north Florida race fans will continue to enjoy the ADRL experience for years to come."

Coughlin latest to join Extreme Pro Stock field
DELAWARE, Ohio - The big names keep coming to the American Drag Racing League. And in drag racing, they don't get much bigger than the name Coughlin.
Second generation racer Troy Coughlin has announced that he will be bringing his brand new Jerry Haas-bulit JEGS.com Pontiac GXP to the the National Guard ADRL tour in 2009. Coughlin will compete in the recently added Extreme Pro Stock category.
"I just sat in this beautiful new race car and all the memories of my 10-plus years in Pro Stock came flooding back," Coughlin said. "There's something about a gasoline-powered car and a five-speed transmission that just does it for me. I can't wait to get started."
For two decades now, Coughlin's been driving the wheels off some kind of hot rod. He started his career in the Sportsman ranks but soon turned professional and entered Pro Stock in 1994, becoming the first of the four Coughlin boys to follow his legendary father into professional straight-line competition.
"The ADRL has really grown into a neat deal and when they added Extreme Pro Stock this off-season it was too tempting to pass up," Coughlin said. "You go to their events and see all these cars you would never imagine going as fast as they go, racing down the track. It's so cool."
Joining Coughlin will be crewmen Bryan Metzenheim, Clint Allerton and Mike Rees.
"We're planning a trip to Palm Beach International Raceway to test as soon as the car is completely put together," Coughlin said. "This is going to be an exciting year for JEGS racing."

Berner set to join Extreme Pro Stock field
CRETE, Ill. – It's been only a few days since the ADRL announced the addition of Extreme Pro Stock to its all-professional drag racing events and the list of big name drivers who have made the decision to join the National Guard ADRL tour in 2009 continues to grow.
The latest to add his name to the burgeoning roster of big-name stars is venerable Pro Stock campaigner Pete Berner, who has announced his intention to bring his championship-caliber team to the ADRL.
Berner is enthusiastic about the opportunity to showcase his team's talents in a new racing venue.
"The ADRL is a great organization and has already done much for our sport," said Berner. "Their innovative approach to competition and fans has set new standards. I think the class will be a hit in the ADRL."
The team will be making additional changes for the season including a new semi-trailer with fan-friendly features. Berner's championship operation gets under way with testing in a few short weeks.

Memphis and Gateway dates added to 2009 schedule
O'FALLON, Mo. - A hometown gig and a visit to the home of the blues are the latest additions to the 2009 National Guard ADRL tour.
ADRL officials have announced that after a two-year hiatus, the National Guard ADRL tour will return to Memphis Motorsports Park on May 22-23 for the ADRL Memphis Drags II. They also announced a return to familiar territory, Gateway International Raceway on June 19-20 for the ADRL Gateway Drags II.
The return to Memphis marks the return of the ADRL to the site of what was perhaps its most defining moment. While surveying a less than expected crowd turnout during the 2006 race, ADRL Executive VP of Operations Jessica Alcoke suggested that perhaps the league should give tickets away to get fans into the seats.
Her idea led to the birth of the successful complimentary ticket distribution program currently utilized by the ADRL for all of its national events.
Memphis Motorsports Park vice president and General Manager Jason Rittenberry and his staff are more than ready to have the ADRL's brand of all-professional drag racing back at their facility.
"Memphis is well aware of the on-track excitement the National Guard ADRL Series provides," said Rittenberrry. "We are excited that the ADRL Memphis Drags is returning home to Memphis Motorsports Park in 2009. We look forward to partnering with ADRL to deliver this marquee event to our race fans in Memphis."
For ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling, the chance to showcase his league's brand of racing in front of the local race fans has been two years in the making.
"Being able to race at our home track was obviously something that has been important to me," said Nowling. "We're thrilled to be back. I'm grateful to (Gateway Vice President and General Manager) Lenny Batycki and his entire staff for all of their work the past several months in making this event a reality."
Two years ago, when the ADRL last visited Gateway, the event was plagued by inclement weather as well as issues with the timing equipment. Nowling has felt that the fans in the bi-state area served by the drag strip never had the opportunity to see a complete National Guard ADRL show.
Batycki wholeheartedly agrees.
"All of us here at Gateway International Raceway are looking forward to the return of the National Guard ADRL to the place we consider to be its home track," said Batycki. "What Kenny Nowling and his group have done in the short time since they last raced here in 2006 has been nothing short of phenomenal.
ADRL officials have secured title sponsorship for both events, with announcements coming within weeks.

ADRL adds Extreme Pro Stock for 2009
O'FALLON, Mo. – For the National Guard American Drag Racing League, it just keeps getting better.
Having already established itself as the fastest growing motorsports series in the world, the National Guard ADRL continues it growth in 2009 with an eye towards the future.
On the heels of the unveiling of the series' expanded 10-race National Guard ADRL schedule, ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling welcomes the addition of the Extreme Pro Stock class to the ADRL family of racers.
"This may be one of the most gratifying moments in our brief history," said Nowling. "While other series across the country are struggling to maintain the status quo, we've been able to add to our roster of racing.
"The ADRL staff has worked diligently for the past several months to put this program together. My personal love for these cars made the task of bringing championship caliber drivers like Robert Patrick and Brian Gahm to the ADRL more of a personal crusade."
"These cars are the quickest and fastest naturally-aspirated in all of racing," added Nowling. "The Extreme Pro Stock class is a tailor-made addition to what is already the most entertaining show for race fans in all of motor sports."
For Patrick (above), the decision to race in the ADRL was an easy one to make.
"I've watched the growth of the ADRL and I'm really impressed with the markets and the venues they race in," said the Virginian, who participated in both National Guard ADRL Extreme Pro Stock exhibition events held in 2008, winning the first one at Budds Creek, MD.
"You want to showcase your car on the best track and in front of the biggest crowds. That's what really impressed me about the ADRL, the size of the crowds and the quality of the facilities where they race."
Gahm (below), who brings his decades long, race-winning career to the ADRL sees the move as an opportunity to re-energize himself and his entire team.
"I can't remember the last time I was as excited as I was at Dragstock V last fall (in Rockingham, NC). When I looked up and saw a sea of more people than I had ever raced in front of, it reminded me of the excitement of when I first started racing.
"I am committed to the entire 2009 National Guard ADRL tour and like so many others, I'm thrilled to be a part of the inaugural season of Extreme Pro Stock in the ADRL."
Beginning at the season opening Dragpalooza V at Houston Raceway Park on March 6, Extreme Pro Stock (XPS) joins the current roster of Pro Extreme, Pro Nitrous, Extreme 10.5 and Pro Extreme Motorcycle at each National Guard ADRL national event, making the ADRL the nation's only all-professional drag racing organization.
Complete class rules and purse information will be available on www.ADRL.us, the official site of the National Guard ADRL, in the coming days.

ADRL Unveils Increase in Prize Money for 2009
O'FALLON, Mo. – American Drag Racing League officials announced a significant increase in prize money for the 2009 National Guard ADRL season which opens in Houston on March 6-7.
"My entire team has worked tirelessly during the off season to pursue additional partnerships to allow us to make a considerable increase to all of our professional purses," said ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling.
With total prize money soaring to over $1.25 million, National Guard ADRL competitors will see an increase in qualifying and round money at each national event.
The winner's share of the Speedtech "Battle for the Belts" at the season finale at the Texas Motorplex in October has more than doubled for each professional class. The winner and world champion will earn $50,000 in Pro Extreme, $50,000 in Pro Nitrous, $25,000 in Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 and $10,000 in Pro Extreme Motorcycle.
In addition to the increase in prize money, competitor's membership fees have been waived. In the past, this fee was $150 annually. As always, there will continue to be no entry fees charged to ADRL competitors at national events.
"While other series continue to charge their competitors large dollar amounts to participate, we feel strongly that our racers shouldn't have to pay us to compete in an ADRL event," said Nowling.
"As I've stated several times before, as long as I am the president of this organization, our racers will never have to pay to entertain our fans."
For additional details on the increased prize money, including a complete class-by-class purse breakdown, go here.

Flowmaster Posts Bounty for Extreme 10.5
O'FALLON, Mo. -- Flowmaster, a mainstay of the American Drag Racing League since its inception, has announced that it is offering a bounty of $5,000 to the first driver competing in the Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 class who can go quicker than 3.99 seconds and an additional $5,000 to the first driver that can go faster than 185 miles per hour.
Both ends of the current Extreme 10.5 class record were set last October at the Texas Motorplex. Gary White (seen here) established the elapsed time mark with a stellar 4.101-second pass while Todd Moyer's 180.45 mph blast set the miles-per-hour standard.
For Flowmaster Senior Vice President of Marketing Richard Small, the bounty evokes memories of the past.
"The Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 class reminds me of the original 'fastest street car' shootouts of the mid-1990s," said Small. "Back then, they raced for satin jackets. We wanted to up the ante a bit."
"As a company, we want to do the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of racers," Small continued. "These drivers are the best at what they do, so why not put a bounty at both ends of the stick?"
With a $5,000 reward for setting each record, it is quite possible that one driver could break both barriers on the same weekend and head home with a cool ten grand in his pocket.
ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling admits that this new incentive will only help to add fuel to the fire that burns in the already ultra-competitive professional class.
"All of our Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 racers accept nothing less than to be the first to cross the finish line on each and every run," said Nowling. "Now, each time they cross that finish line they'll be looking for something extra."
In order to qualify for the bounty, a driver must be utilizing a Flowmaster exhaust product, the official exhaust product of the ADRL, and be the first to break the respective mark either in qualifying or eliminations.

Janis Ready For a Change—and Challenge
ELMA, NY – There are two ways to look at "change." You can feel that the thought of making a change is so intimidating that you do nothing, or settle for less simply because you are so afraid of that change, or, you can look at each step, good or bad, as a learning experience and approach the change as a challenge. Mike Janis Racing and the crew at Jan-Cen Racing Engines are up for a challenge.
The 2009 season will be Janis' first full season running with the American Drag Racing League (ADRL). Janis' Dan Page-built, '67 Cynergy-bodied Firebird will compete in the ultra-competitive Pro Extreme (PX) class. Over the past decade Janis' Pro Modified accomplishments have made the Lancaster, NY, native one of the legends of the class.
Multiple performance awards as well as winning two series titles (four if you take out the bonus attendance points) and 19 career wins have placed Janis second on the all-time Pro Mod win list. Now it's time for a new challenge.
Converting from a high-helix supercharged application to a screw compressor-assisted engine will be the largest hurdle for the Elma, NY-based team.
"We'll be out of our comfort zone for sure," said Janis. "There's bound to be some growing pains, but I'm very confident in my team's abilities.
"We've built many screw engines for our customers (at Jan-Cen Racing Engines) and we also have a very good tune up. We have extensive knowledge of supercharging and have taken the conventional high-helix design to new levels and we will continue our work there but I feel some of that knowledge from the high helix will transfer over to the screw. We feel that there are gains to be made within the conventional compressor design. I'm hoping our drive and knowledge in this area can put us in the hunt fairly quick."
Crew chief Mike Janis Jr. feels the ADRL is the right fit for Mike Janis Racing in 2009 partly because of ADRL president Kenny Nowling.
"What Kenny (Nowling) has accomplished in such a short time is very impressive," said Mike Janis Jr. "To be honest with the way things are going in our sport right now I'm glad that people like Kenny are part of it. He took a big chance a few years ago starting the ADRL. It's done nothing but grow and it's quickly become the premier place for fast doorslammers. We're looking forward to running against all the great Pro Extreme competitors and I can't wait to make a run at the National Guard/Flowmaster championship."

ADRL Approves Nitro Motors in Pro Extreme for 2009
O'FALLON, Mo. - After weeks of rumors floating on blog sites and message boards, ADRL officials have made it official - nitromethane injected big-block engines – commonly referred to as A/Fuel motors – will be legal for use in the National Guard ADRL Pro Extreme class beginning in 2009."I think this is something that will be real exciting for the fans," said Bubba Corzine, ADRL Vice President of Competition. "Watching the flames rise over the roof of the car at night will bring a whole new level of excitement to the ADRL."
Initially, fuel mixtures up to 94% nitromethane will be allowed. However, the ADRL reserves the right to review that number as part of an effort to maintain a competitive playing field.
Any competitor planning to utilize this engine combination must first be approved by the ADRL Competition Department.
Corzine requests that anyone requiring additional technical information please contact him at the ADRL Competition Department at (636) 272-2375 .
