McDonald Sr. Hospitalized - UPDATED 06/02

Your Agent just got back from visiting Bennie McDonald Sr. (far left), who was admitted to Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital yesterday after suffering an early-morning stroke at his Locust Grove, GA, home. His wife, Debbie, said McDonald Sr. recovered with no ill effects from a previous stroke several years ago and she’s hoping for the best again this time.

McDonald, father of Pro Extreme pilot Bennie Jr., appeared tired, but coherent and talkative for the 15 minutes or so your Agent spent with him in the hospital’s intensive-care unit. He is undergoing daily CAT scans and will be monitored until Tuesday while doctors establish a course of care, which may or may not involve surgery.  Currently, McDonald has lost use of most of his left side and the CAT scans are showing distinct bleeding in the right side of his brain, with additional bleeding in the left half.

National Guard ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling phoned in to Bennie Jr. while your Agent was present, extending his personal concern and well wishes from the entire ADRL family.

Get well soon, Mr. Bennie!

UPDATE 06/02, 8:40 pm: Your Agent just got off the phone with Debbie McDonald, who said her husband’s doctors told her tonight that Bennie Sr’s latest CAT scan shows no improvement, but no worsening, either. Right now they’re just going to continue with observation, but also said he’d remain hospitalized for at least two more weeks for rehabilitation. Your Agent’s thoughts remain with the entire McDonald clan.

Memphis Drags Coverage Updated

Your Agent just wanted to take a moment to mention the photo gallery from last weekend’s Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II has been updated with images from local photog Blair Ball, along with pics by ADRL shooters Roger Richards and Ian Tocher.

There’s also a complete rundown of the qualifying orders and results from two rounds of eliminations before rain rolled in to postpone the semis and finals for all classes to June 5, during Friday-night qualifying for next weekend’s Ford Drive One Summer Drags V at U.S. 131 Dragway in Martin, MI. A new feature on ADRL.us allows users to view results sorted by racing class, too.

The point standings as they stood at the Memphis interruption also have been updated, though points for records set during the event will not be added until the finals are completed, so at minimum both Jason Scruggs’ and Billy Glidden’s totals will increase based on their stellar performances in the Volunteer State—unless, that is, someone else steps up to steal their thunder.

Bouncing Baby Boy for Janis Jr.

The announcement is covered elsewhere here at ADRL.us, but your Agent wants to personally congratulate Mike Janis Jr. and his wife, Melissa, on the birth of their first child. Mike is crew chief on his dad’s Pro Extreme entry and wisely stayed home from this past weekend’s Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II in order not to miss the blessed event.

His decision paid off when Jacob Michael Janis arrived at 5:11 p.m. EST on May 23rd, and weighed in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces. Your Agent is very happy to know both mom and son are doing well.

Your Agent joins everyone in the extended National Guard ADRL family in wishing Melissa, Mike and Jacob all the best.

Now get some sleep!

National Guard ADRL on CompetitionPlus.com

When the name “Morris Johnson Jr.” (right) popped up on the Extreme Pro Stock entry list at last weekend’s rain-shortened Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II, most racers and fans probably never gave it a second thought. However, many of the, shall we say, “veterans,” of the sport certainly took ample notice.

In his post-race online meanderings, your Agent came across a story by his old pal Bobby Bennett over at CompetitionPlus.com that chronicles some of Johnson’s life experiences and the drag racing path that took him to Memphis and put him behind the wheel of a race car for the first time in a decade. Trust your Agent on this one; it’s a story you want to know, especially coming so soon on the heels of Memorial Day.

While at CompPlus, you might also want to check out a couple of short reports about Pro Extreme drivers Jason Hamstra and Don Wootton and the decidedly different approaches they’ve taken to the quickest and fastest door car racing on the planet.

The entire Memphis Drags race package is there, too.

Good reads all.

Memorial Day

Your Agent attended a very moving Memorial Day event this morning that featured representatives from all branches of the U.S. military, including, of course, the National Guard, which plays such a huge role at each and every ADRL national event.

Please keep all members of our military—past and present—in your hearts and minds today, and give thanks for all they do to keep us safe and free 365 days a year.

Master Mixologist at Work

True to his word, Pro Extreme team owner Camp Stanley made sure your Agent received one of his world-infamous margaritas on Thursday evening as the early arrivals waited for the start of this weekend’s Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II in Millington, TN.

Bush Back in D’Aprile Pits

Your Agent was pleased to learn that Pro Extreme team owner Mel Bush will be back in action this weekend at the Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II after suffering a health scare last month at the previous National Guard ADRL event at Valdosta, GA.

Bush fell ill Friday night in Georgia and had to be briefly hospitalized, shortly after driver Tommy D’Aprile put his fan-favorite ‘62 Bel Air into the Pro Extreme field in fourth place, then reached the quarter-finals on race day.

“The doctors have cleared me, and I can’t wait to get back to the track,” Bush said. “I was extremely happy after qualifying in Georgia, and very disappointed I didn’t get to see eliminations. We’re going into our third race and I still haven’t seen us take a round, [but] I’m sure that’ll change this weekend.”

Good to have you back, Mel.

Independence Drags Moving?

Hmmmmm, your Agent just noticed the location for the July 3-4 National Guard ADRL Independence Drags changed on the online schedule to “TBA.”

He’ll have to track down one of the power brokers here at ADRL worldwide headquarters and get back to you on that. Could an announcement be coming?

Stanley Determined to Rock Memphis

Memphis may be the Home of the Blues, but the Stanley & Weiss Pro Extreme gang have promised your Agent they’re headed to this weekend’s Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II with every intent to rock the house!

That’s Raymond Stanley, brother of driver John, restoring a Maaco of Hagerstown sheen to the battered rear fender of the team’s all-new Tim McAmis ‘68 Camaro after its run-in with the Cecil County Dragway wall on its very first test launch last month.

Seems there’s a lot of pent-up energy up Delaware way after medical malfunctions for team principal Camp Stanley prevented the team’s appearance at the Hardee’s Georgia Drags V, followed by the Cecil County incident and then a planned test session last weekend at the same track got washed out by drizzly rain.

So the S&W gang are headed to Memphis come Wednesday night with a brand-new, untested piece in the trailer.

Hey, Tommy Gray was in a similar situation last year at Budd’s Creek, MD, and he went home with the Minuteman trophy, so your Agent knows it can be done.

He’ll be watching with interest, but regardless of what happens on the track, your Agent intends to collect on that world-famous Camp Stanley margarita he was promised!

Video: Frankie Taylor at ADRL Valdosta

Technical troubles prevented your Agent from posting any videos from last month’s National Guard ADRL Hardee’s Georgia Drags V, but the crack IT staff at ADRL worldwide headquarters finally figured it out.

So, without further ado, here’s Frankie “Mad Man” Taylor taking you for a semi-final ride on the back of his Pro Extreme Corvette.

And if you like what you see, go Beyond the Guardwall for three more.

Hossler’s New Hot Rod

Your Agent was checking out the happenings over at www.ProModifieds.us and came across this image of Alex Hossler’s new 1970(.5) Camaro about to make a test pass at Byron Dragway in Illinois.

Not much to go on, but the Chris Duncan-built car apparently went 3.90 at 190 mph in its first eighth-mile run, so your Agent assumes Hossler is pumped up as he plans to debut his new hot rod in National Guard ADRL Pro Extreme competition at this weekend’s Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II.

Click here to see a couple more pics of this sharp-looking ride.

‘Cuda Beast’ Set to Terrorize Memphis

Memphis Mopar fans rejoice!

Word just reached your Agent that Blue Ridge, GA’s Paul Gibbs and his awesome crimson 1970 “Cuda Beast” are on their way to Millington, TN, for this weekend’s National Guard ADRL Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Gibbs is the classic “little guy” campaigner that your Agent just loves to see come out to race against the best Pro Extreme can throw at him. With support from Jeffers Pro Cars and a new Mickey Thompson tire deal that (if your Agent isn’t confused) makes him the only M/T-shod racer in the PX pits, Gibbs says he’s confident he can qualify and go a couple of rounds.

Your Agent and every Mopar maniac in Memphis would love to see that.

Register Online; Save Time

Your Agent received a request from National Guard ADRL Director of Membership Services Aimee Visney to remind all competitors and crew members who are planning on attending this weekend’s Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II—but are not yet ADRL members—to complete their membership application online since ADRL membership is required in order to receive race credentials.

Online registration is fast and easy and will save you time once you’ve arrived at Memphis Motorsports Park this weekend. For those not familiar with the new registration requirements and revised restricted access procedures for 2009, please read here.

So, to help avoid waiting in potentially lengthy lines, take the time to register online today, then head over to the ADRL Membership Services booth at the track to visit Visney and her helpful staff and pick up your credentials.

And tell ‘em your Agent sent you.

First Look: Campbell’s PXM ‘Thing 1’

It’s no secret your Agent loves the Pro Extreme Motorcycle (PXM) class and when you see rides like this coming down the pike it’s not at all difficult to understand why.

This is the first of two identical J.R. Motorsports/2010 Timblin Chassis machines constructed for PXM veteran Monte Campbell, who appreciates sponsor support from J.R. Pump Service, SchnitzRacing.com and Voltphreaks.com.

Dubbed “Thing 1” the new bike actually made its National Guard ADRL debut as a non-descript, black-primered entry during last month’s Hardee’s Georgia Drags at Valdosta, GA, where Campbell ran a solid 4.32 at 163 mph to qualify 11th in the quickest PXM field ever. That it came in Friday night’s session and represented the bike’s first-ever trip down the eighth mile made it an even more impressive accomplishment.

Anyway, now with its new paint job by Gene Smith, the bike looks as good as it runs, making your Agent look even more forward to seeing it perform May 22-23, in the Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II.

Gaylen Goes 200!

Your Agent doesn’t have a lot to go on here, but one of his most trusted Texas operatives called this afternoon to say Pro Extreme star Gaylen Smith (right) made his first 200-mph pass last night during a test race leading up to next weekend’s National Guard ADRL Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Smith also drove his wild ‘70 Cuda to the TOPMA win, so the LenMar Motorsports “Hell Fish” gang should be primed and pumped heading into Millington, TN.

The operative also reported that Ken Thomas in another LenMar entry made a 3.85 pass, which—if your Agent is not mistaken—would be the quickest eighth-mile pass ever (in competition) by a roots blower assisted car.

Your Agent sends hearty congrats to the entire LenMar operation.

Tim McAmis Rolling Parts Store Memphis Bound

We’re a week away from the third stop on the 2009 National Guard tour, but your Agent hears the boys at Tim McAmis Race Cars (TMRC) have already got their rolling chassis warehouse ready for the Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II at Memphis Motorsports Park in Millington, Tennessee. Where they find the time your Agent isn’t sure since he also heard they’ve just wrapped up building three brand-new cars for the Pro Nitrous and Pro Extreme classes.

Anyway, your Agent’s insider at TMRC asked him to remind everyone that they need to stop by the rig in Memphis to check out the latest in drag racing wiring systems. The Automated Racing Technology control system employs all digital signals and its touch-screen, heads-up display makes changing any function on a racecar a breeze. “It’s the wave of the future,” your Agent’s operative declared.

He also pointed out Brown and Miller Racing Solutions has come onboard the TMRC mobile shop, creating the ability for technicians to manufacture custom, lightweight hoses for practically any ADRL application on site at each event. There are also components on display from B&J Transmission, NW Radios, Aeromotive fuel systems, Strange Engineering, Safety Solutions, Sonny’s Racing Engines, Altronics weather stations, PITMAT USA, and Roger Connolly from Racepak, so your Agent can confidently suggest a visit to keep up on the latest and greatest for ADRL racing.

Oh yeah, your Agent would be remiss in not mentioning TMRC’s superior trackside repair service, too. They carry a full line of composites and metal to make repairs and best of all, there’s no need to worry at the race track about who’s welding your project—it’ll be one of TMRC’s certified welders that’ll get you back on the racing surface.

Hmmmm, maybe your Agent should think about becoming a professional pitch man.

Nowling Nails Golf Shot

National Guard ADRL head honcho Kenny Nowling told your Agent he hadn’t swung a club in more than five years (Well, not a golf club!), but while visiting the Washington, D.C. area last week he participated in a National Guard golf tourney and picked up “Closest to the Pin” honors on the par-3 11th.

But for those scant four feet, Nowling said there was a shiny, new sports car awaiting him if the ball had dropped in the hole.

Oh well, boss man, at least you earned bragging rights.

Make Memphis Media Requests Soon

Your Agent was asked by ADRL VP of Publications Ian Tocher to post a reminder to all media members planning to cover the May 22-23, Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II that they must submit credential requests no later than May 18, or risk being left out.

So all you ink-stained (pixel-strained?) wretches and trackside shutterbugs better drop a note to ian@adrl.us or give him a call at (404) 375-4895—and it might not hurt to get a jump on credentialing for the ADRL national event on June 5-6, at Martin, MI, too.

Speed Meets the Green in Michigan

Now, your Agent will be the first to admit he’s no Panther Forest (or whatever that guy’s name is), but he’s been known to lose a ball or two in the bushes over the years.

And that’s why he’ll be at the Lynx Golf Course in Otsego, MI, June 4, just a day before the Pizza Hut Summer Drags V gets underway at nearby U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

The Inaugural U.S. 131 Motorsports Park Racers’ Dream Golf Outing will feature a four-ball scramble format, resulting in a foursome team score after each player hits from the best ball location after each stroke. The tourney is open to all National Guard ADRL teams, sponsors and fans, but with only 72 players (18 foursomes) being admitted, you’d better get in line behind your Agent now to secure a tee time.

The $70/player fee gets you an 18-hole round of golf on what’s promised to be a challenging, but fun course, and includes cart rental, lunch and a barbecue with burnout contest back at the track afterwards, Your Agent also hears there will be abundant prizes for things like closest to the pin, longest drive, chip and challenge, and even a chance to win a car from Allegan Motors for potting a hole-in-one on a pre-determined par-3 hole. Your Agent is cleaning out his garage in preparation.

For more information or to sign up, contact U.S. 131 Corporate Sales Manager Phil Earnshaw at (269) 672-7800 or phil@us131msp.com.

First Look: Riesterer’s ‘Mad Scientist’ Revealed

One of your Agent’s anonymous operatives bravely entered the inner sanctum of LenMar Motorsports in Mansfield, TX, where he (or she?) snapped a few spy pics of the new “Mad Scientist” wrap applied to Doug Riesterer’s ‘68 Camaro Pro Nitrous entry.

Riesterer, who joined the LenMar team shortly after crashing his car during Friday-night qualifying at the National Guard ADRL season opener at Houston in March, has been in the rebuilding phase ever since and appears to be on track for a return to competition May 22-23, in the Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Your Agent looks forward to Riesterer’s return.

Swearingen Enjoys IndyCar Experience

National Guard Team Blue driver Travis Swearingen recently visited Kansas Speedway, where he met up with fellow National Guard driver and IndyCar Series star Dan Wheldon and took a couple of laps around the 1.5 mile oval as a passenger in a unique, two-seat IndyCar open-wheeled race car.

“We got up to about 170 (mph), I think, and I’ve got to say, the sideways G-force was pretty awesome,” Swearingen told your Agent. Spoken like a true race car driver he added, “It was a lot of fun, but you’re sitting right behind the driver so it’s kind of hard to see what’s coming up. I’d like to be up front, ‘cause it’s got to be a rush seeing that wall coming up before you turn.”

Swearingen and Wheldon also went for an orientation flight in a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter together (below) to the Kansas National Guard Headquarters where they toured the facility, then signed autographs (above left) for more than 50 National Guard soldiers and their families.

Later it was off to Cabela’s, “the world’s foremost outfitter of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear,” where Swearingen and Wheldon participated in another autograph session (above right) for scores of National Guard ADRL and IndyCar Series fans.

“That was really cool,” Swearingen said later. “There was even a guy there that I knew from years ago when I just started racing in my Camaro street car. Dan’s a nice guy, too, so we had a good time with all the fans there. I’m looking forward to doing something like that again.”

Thyen Plans Racing Return in PXM at Memphis

Your Agent was outside yelling at kids on his front lawn when he found the proverbial plain, brown envelope trapped beneath the windshield wiper of his prized Pinto.

Inside were two photos and a note explaining that former AMA Dragbike Pro ET world champion Mike Thyen (pronounced “T-yen”), plans to make his Pro Extreme Motorcycle debut May 22-23, in the Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II aboard his Fish’s Customs/C&W Chassis/RBM 2009 Hayabusa. Thyen also has enlisted the services of Rob Bush as engine builder and crew chief.

The real buzz on the bike, though, is that it carries a genuine Hyabusa engine and will be self starting and able to be ridden back to the pits after a pass under its own power. Your Agent has to see that!

Thyen has been out of the dragbike scene for the last five years to concentrate on raising his two children, along with establishing Westlake Auto & Tire in Denver, NC. Your Agent understands Thyen always dreamed of running in Pro Stock, but with his “not a horse jockey” physique, decided it was impossible to be competitive there. Well, lo and behold, along comes the National Guard ADRL PXM class with its more flexible chassis rules, nitrous oxide, and quicker E.T.s, making it the obvious choice for getting back in the saddle.

The note concluded by assuring your Agent that the new Thyen/Bush team realizes they face a steep learning curve, but they have all the confidence in the world they can put this bike in a PXM winner’s circle sooner than most people might think.

You can be sure your Agent will be watching with interest.

Sampey Suiting Up for Star PXM Entry

Your Agent doesn’t have much on this one yet, but hears that former Pro Stock Motorcycle champ Angelle Sampey will be soon be astride the Star Racing Pro Extreme Motorcycle entry.

Star owner and crew chief George Bryce apparently told National Guard ADRL officials he’s rehired his former rider at least for the Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II and possibly future events.

Angelle Sampey a PXM rookie. Who da’ thunk it?

Anonymous Donor Credits Carpenter

File this one under what goes around comes around.

Pro Nitrous pioneer Charles Carpenter—sidelined since going through a spectacular crash at the National Guard ADRL ‘09 season opener in his iconic 1955 Chevy—received a call last night from ADRL head man Kenny Nowling, who said he was holding in his hand a cool $5 Gs that arrived at ADRL worldwide headquarters with only a note saying it came from ‘55’s #-1 Fan.

“I was astounded, absolutely blown away,” Carpenter told your Agent. “And it comes at absolutely the perfect time. It makes me able to see light at the end of the tunnel. I may never know who these people or person is, but I really want to thank them; this is like Christmas in May for me.”

Your Agent is thoroughly convinced the anonymous philanthropy is a direct result of all the positive mojo Carpenter has sown over his lengthy career.

“I’ve always tried to take the time to talk to people and answer their questions because I know what it’s like to be on the other side of that rope or outside the trailer. I genuinely like the interraction with the fans, too, sometimes a little too much when my crew is trying to drag me back to work,” he said with a laugh. “But no fans—no racing. It’s that simple and if anyone doesn’t know that I just don’t think they’ll be around very long.”

Carpenter’s car has been at Alan Pittman’s Greenville, SC chassis shop since the accident early in March at Houston and now sits a little lower and with four inches added to its now-113-inch wheelbase. It also sports several new body panels and will soon be repainted in Carpenter’s familiar purple and yellow hues by Reid Robbins at East Coast Refinishing in Manassas, VA.

“We won’t be making it to Memphis (May 22-23, for the ADRL Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II), but I’m 95-percent sure we’ll be in Michigan (June 5-6, for the ADRL Pizza Hut Summer Drags V),” said Carpenter, who added that he, too, is on the mend with just one more scheduled visit with his orthopedist May 15, when he expects to receive full clearance to resume racing at full tilt.

Your Agent suggests any sponsor with a few extra coins hidden in the couch cushions could benefit greatly from backing a proven ADRL winner like Carpenter, a true living legend of the sport.

Hernandez Adds to Personal Pit Crew

If your Agent isn’t mistaken, that’s an even bigger smile than National Guard Pro Extreme driver Joshua Hernandez has after winning another ADRL national event.

Hernandez—with a little help from his wife, Amber—welcomed young Xander Alan into the world yesterday at 5:09 p.m. Central. The little guy weighed in at 7 lbs, 10 ozs. and measured 20 inches at birth.

Your Agent is happy to report both mom and son are doing well and he joins everyone at ADRL worldwide headquarters in wishing Xander and the entire Hernandez clan all the best for their future.

All together, now, Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww ...

Big Addition Coming Soon to ADRL.us

Your Agent isn’t at liberty to spill the beans just yet, but he has it on impeccable authority that ADRL.us (Yes, this site right here!) will soon be offering an exciting new option to National Guard ADRL fans and racers.

You know your Agent already spends far too much time with his eyes glued to a computer screen and he has a feeling this is just going to square off his eyeballs that much more.

Oh, the sacrifices he makes to keep informed and entertained by all things ADRL!

End of Line for ‘Undertaker’

Your Agent received a call this afternoon from “Tombstone Tommy” Gray, who delivered the unfortunate news that he’s getting out of the racing game and his entire Undertaker Racing operation is up for sale, including his Jerry Haas-built ‘06 GTO fitted with a screw-blown Jan-Cen powerplant and the Vanishing Point ‘68 Camaro (also with Jan-Cen power, but now sporting a 20-percent OD, roots-type blower), that Gray drove to victory in its very first outing at the National Guard ADRL event last summer at Budds Creek, MD. Also available are Gray’s 2006 Freightliner Show Hauler and 34-foot aluminum stacker trailer, along with an extensive cache of spare parts.

“I’ve thought about this for the last couple of months and it wasn’t an easy decision to come to, but I just can’t keep doing this anymore,” Gray said. “It’s not just the money, but all the time it takes, too. I would still be interested in continuing as a driver for someone if that option came available, so who knows, maybe I’ll be back someday.”

Gray also mentioned he’s willing to sell the operation as a whole, including the valuable “Undertaker” copyright, plus tuning and “learning” advice, if needed.

“Both cars are race ready to put your butt into and go racing!” Gray declared. “They’ve both got the best parts available and are ready to win races.”

If you’re interested in negotiating with Gray, drop your Agent an e-mail at agent660@adrl.us and he’ll put you in touch.

R.I.P., Undertaker.

Moyer Lightening his Load

Your Agent received a call today from Chad Rogers, crew chief for “Turbo Todd” Moyer (behind car, driver side w/headset), who confirmed he is swapping in a Rossler transmission that should lose close to 50 pounds from their ‘04 Chevy Cavalier.

Moyer and crew had a great second-round showing with the car at last month’s Hardee’s Georgia drags V, despite having no test laps on it prior to arriving at South Georgia Motorsports Park. The sleek, black Cav was constructed over the course of just nine days to replace the Extreme 10.5 record-setting 2000 Firebird that Moyer destroyed in a crash just a week or so after the National Guard ADRL season opener early in March.

Your Agent has already marked the Pasadena, TX-based team as one to watch at the Quarter-Max Memphis Drags II, May 22-23, in Millington, Tennessee.

VERSUS Locator Available at ADRL.us

Well, your Agent certainly enjoyed the recently completed National Guard ADRL Hardee’s Georgia Drags V shown in HDTV this past Sunday on the Versus television network.

It was a great show, highlighting wins by Pro Extreme rookie Jason Hamstra, veteran Jim Halsey in Pro Nitrous, the seemingly unbeatable Billy Glidden in Extreme 10.5, Brian Gahm in the new Extreme Pro Stock class, and Matt Prophit, who finally scored a win in his sixth trip to a Pro Extreme Motorcycle final.

If you missed it, shame on you! But just in case it was because you weren’t sure of where to find Versus among the typically hundreds of channels now available from most cable and satellite providers, ADRL.us has added a handy, dandy Versus locator.

Just click on the “Watch ADRL on VERSUS” button near the top left of the homepage, then insert your zip code into the appropriate box. A list of service providers and channels specific to your area will pop up. It’s that simple.
