At the last stop on the ADRL tour Team Aruba was having one of the best outings of their career. They secured the number one qualifying spot early and hung onto it for the duration. Unfortunately, Mother Nature moved in in the form of rain and stopped Team Aruba from defending their position in eliminations. Now, with the ADRL Spring Drags IV approaching this weekend, the Team hopes to claim the coveted pole position again, and this time take it to the winner’s circle.
To help cheer them on, two special guests will be on hand with Team Aruba at Cordova Dragway Park. Driver of the Aruba.com / Alltel Wireless Mustang, Trevor Eman, is greatly looking forward to welcoming two of his family members onto the team this weekend, Mike and Anouk Eman.
Anouk Eman, besides being cousin to an accomplished Extreme Pro Stock driver, is an impressive standout in her own right. A student at Lindwood University, Anouk is a gold medal winning synchronized swimmer, who also recently won first place at the US National Championships in Greensboro, NC – the same weekend that Team Aruba qualified number one in Valdosta.
Trevor’s uncle, Mike Eman, is a loyal drag racing supporter and also happens to be the Prime Minister of Aruba. The team from the “friendly island” is excited both to show their visitors ADRL drag racing and to introduce their drag racing ‘family’ to Prime Minister Eman and Anouk.
“This weekend should be a lot of fun for Team Aruba with Anouk and Mike supporting us,” told Trevor. “We are looking forward to having them with us. To celebrate the occasion, Team Aruba is organizing a cookout in our pit area for Friday night, following testing. We are inviting all Extreme Pro Stock participants and ADRL officials to come by our pit area, grab a bite to eat and meet both Anouk, a gold medalist synchronized swimmer and also Mike Eman, the Prime Minister of Aruba. As a little extra incentive, we will also be making our famous ‘Aruba Juice’ – a fruity cocktail pretty well known by now in the ADRL pit area.”
With the two honored guests supporting Team Aruba at the Spring Drags, Trevor Eman hopes their cheering section is just what the team needs to continue their performance:
“Our last race went awesome. It was the first time we ever qualified number one in an Extreme Pro Stock field. The unfortunate part was that the event got cancelled due to the rain that plagued Sunday racing.
We are coming into this race as ‘defending’ number one qualifier, and we still have unfinished business, so to speak. Our goal is to finish what we started in Valdosta here at this race. Hopefully we can make that happen in front of our family that is going to be with us in Cordova.”

Officials from the American Drag Racing League announced today that communications leader Simply Phones has been named the title sponsor of the ADRL U.S. Drags VI, June 8 – 9 at Virginia Motorsports Park, in Petersburg, Va.
“We are excited to welcome to welcome Simply Phones to the growing family of ADRL marketing partners,” said ADRL President Kenny Nowling. “With the addition of the new Pro Drag Radial class, the U.S. Drags is poised to be one of the most memorable events in ADRL history. Simply Phones willingness to think outside of the box, when it comes to how they market their company, makes them an ideal partner for the ADRL.”
Free tickets to the ADRL Simply Phones U.S. Drags VI can be found at several participating retail partners throughout Petersburg, Dinwiddie, Richmond and the surrounding area. Free e-tickets to the event can be printed at http://www.adrl.us/free-tickets/event4/.
“Kenny and his team had us as their guests at the recent ADRL Hardee’s Georgia Drags event and we were blown away,” said Simply Phones President Carter Kessler. “When our team walked around the pits and grandstands, we saw literally hundreds of people who fit our demographic of small to medium sized business owners. The opportunity for us to market Simply Phones to the huge crowds expected to attend the U.S. Drags is going to be tremendous, however it is the month long in-market promotions and the free tickets being distributed to thousands of potential Simply Phones’ customers that make this partnership a perfect fit.”
At a recent test session at US 131 Motorsports Park Pete Berner finally began to feel like the Summit Racing Equipment Team’s hard work was producing the desired results. “We put a tremendous amount of time and effort into our program,” told Berner, “and we’ve seen good results with this machine here and there, but the big key missing from our success was consistency. We made some pretty significant changes prior to this test session and the car was killer right out of the box. We were able to repeat our results in the following runs. Overall, this test session produced great results that boosted my confidence in this car and our ability to use consistency to turn the win light on again.
“My team just keeps getting better and better,” continued Berner. “RV [Rick Varnold] and Eric [Flemming] put in the hours and dedication and Tom [Pierson] has brought new life and focus to the team. Many thanks to them as well as our new associate Mark Eckman with CarSafe who is great support and has also provided the resources for us to utilize Jeff Perley as a consultant. The entire team is dedicated to seeing this Summit Racing Equipment Camaro succeed and it shows.”
The Summit Team is a common sight at US 131 Motorsports Park, where Berner not only tests frequently, but also participates in match races and special events. May 10-11 Berner will be on hand for the track’s 30th Annual Thunder Nationals.
“Jason [Peterson, General Manager] did an awesome job preparing the track for us at this test session,” Berner relayed. “It was phenomenal. The consistency of the surface allowed us to make back to back runs and evaluate our changes and provide feedback to our sponsors. We’re testing a next generation tire for Hoosier that promises to be even better than the ones we’re currently using. Hoosier is always moving forward with their products, like all of our product sponsors, and it’s important to us to be able to give them helpful feedback.
“We’re looking forward to being a part of the Thunder Nationals again this year. It’s a neat event where we have the opportunity to see always many of our local Summit fans. I hate that it fell on top of the Mountain Motor Nationals at MIR. I appreciate Royce [Miller] putting on that event and normally try to support it, but I made this commitment first.”
In perhaps the biggest announcement of the year, the ADRL just released that they will increase event purses by $100,000 and resume the Battle for the Belts shootout for all classes with a whopping $50,000 purse for Extreme Pro Stock, Pro Extreme and Pro Nitrous.
“I have to thank Kenny [Nowling, ADRL owner] for connecting the resources to increase the event purses and give us the opportunity to run for a prestigious Battle for the Belts event,” commented Berner. Kenny has put a tremendous amount of hard work into his return at to the ADRL and it shows. This purse structure will provide for the caliber of racing that will not only build each class, but will benefit and grow the series overall. I look forward to racing with the ADRL and seeing what the future holds.”
The last time Mountain Motor cars had the chance to race for a $50,000 event purse was the 2008 IHRA Pro Stock Showdown. Berner won that event and walked away with the 2008 IHRA Pro Stock Championship in the same weekend. With his renewed confidence, he now hopes that history can repeat itself.
“We’ve run in several of these Battle for the Belts, but we’ve never come out on top. I think it’s about my turn. We now have a very competitive car with a wide window for making consistently good runs. We may have gotten this together just in time to take home that $50,000 payday.”
Following last Friday’s announcement of the $500,000.00 Battle for the Belts and the $100,000.00 purse increase across all ADRL classes, ADRL competitors will have an opportunity to earn more than $2.3 million dollars in 2013. “There is nothing more satisfying than to be able to reward our loyal racers financially,” said ADRL President Kenny Nowling. “Our work is nowhere near finished however. The ADRL team will continue to work tirelessly to increase our purses to our racers even more. Without their courage and investment, there is no ADRL. They have and always will be our first priority.”
Not to be lost in this financial windfall for ADRL racers is the addition of the new Pro Drag Radial class which will debut at the U.S. Drags VI on June 8th and 9th at Virginia Motorsports Park. The Pro Drag Radial rules and purse will be announced in the coming days.
“We are always looking for ways to increase the entertainment that we provide to our fans,” said ADRL Competition Director Bubba Corzine. “The drag radial cars and the racers who drive them have become extremely popular. We think Pro Drag Radial will be a perfect fit to our already tremendous show.”

At nearly 180 miles per hour, ADRL Pro Nitrous veteran and former national event winner Johnny Pilcher got a much closer view of ADRL Pro Nitrous rookie Matt Suite’s ’68 Camaro than he would have liked during qualifying at the ADRL Hardee’s Georgia Drags VII on Saturday, April 13th at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Both drivers did an amazing job of avoiding catastrophe and Pilcher still clocked an impressive 4.071 second elapsed time at 176.67 miles per hour. (Photo by Roger Richards/ADRL)
