There was nothing easy about Cary Goforth’s win in Extreme Pro Stock at last weekend’s Spring Drags III at Bristol Dragway, but in going 4.091 at 175.57 mph in his Jerry Haas Race Cars GXP to beat Richie Stevens Jr. in the finals, Goforth became the winningest driver in the class with his seventh victory.
This one will earn a special spot for Goforth, not only because of where he did it, but also how he earned it.
“This never gets old,†Goforth said. “Today and (Friday), I didn’t have the best car. The
motor’s tired, but that made this is a satisfying win. The guys worked very hard to get a little extra and this is very rewarding.“When the pressure was on, I was able to drive. We had some adversity, but that just makes it sweeter. Today, we had to be on every time and that includes me. This is really amazing.â€
Goforth qualified in the No. 3 spot with a 4.10 at 174.89 mph, knocking off Scott Hintz, Pete Berner and Richard Penland to reach the finals.
Cary Goforth was able to qualify in the #3 spot with a 4.10 @ 174.89 and match up against Scott Hintz in the first round of eliminations taking the win with a 4.148 to the 4.150 of Hintz. Goforth would then have to take on Pete Berner in the second round of eliminations. Goforth would win this matchup with a 4.118 to the 4.299 of Berner. In the 3rd round of eliminations Cary would meet up with Richard Penland taking the win with a 4.109 to a 4.378 of Penland.
A round later, Cary and Goforth Racing, which is Goforth Racing is sponsored by Lithium Pro Batteries, Sonny’s Racing Engines, Access Employer Services, Mickey Thompson Tires, and Dean’s Casing Service, had their seventh victory in Extreme Pro Stock.
Goforth credits current Crew Chief Brian “Lump” Self with 4 of those wins while the other 3 were with previous crew chief Chris Bell.
“It took both Chris and Lump both to get us this title and I wanted to take this moment to acknowledge their hard work as well as all the crew guys who have worked with us on the seven wins. It’s a great accomplishment to add to our list,” said Cary. “I am so proud of our team.”
